Se sabe históricamente que tres días duró la batalla de Arcole en la que luchaban los soldados de Napoleón y las fuerzas austriacas. Las tropas napoleónicas habían tenido en Lodi, Italia resonantes triunfos. Pero ahora, en Arcole, tropezaban con una resistencia que les impedía pasar el puente.
Todos los asaltos de la mejor infantería del mundo se estrellaban contra la resistencia austriaca. Napoleón comprendió al punto la gravedad del momento, al ver como el enemigo atacaba el flanco de los granaderos franceses, que ante el fuego austriaco se detuvieron indecisos.
Entonces Napoleón, bajó de su caballo, empuñó una bandera y, abalanzándose hacia el puente, exclamó: “! Soldados! ¿No sois ya los valientes de Lodi? ¡Seguidme!” y avanzó entre una lluvia de balas de metralleta, rodeado de su estado mayor.
Al vacilar, los soldados franceses se habían olvidado de que eran los mismos que había vencido en Lodi.
